Career Development Joint Project

Hullo All,
Can see that many of our fellow learners have finished the tasters and have come up with good reviews and these are just MOCK EVALUATIONS.so YAY, great going all.
Me and Misha teamed up last week to work on Career Development Scenario and communicated via emails.
As Jon mentioned in his blog review on the same taster, about how others have come up with Solutions which we too thought about But they have been "taken" so heres us making an attempt of coming up with something "wee bit different" review by our other colleagues.

Career Development [Scenario]
A previously face to face course has been re-developed to cater for off-campus, distance students, working independently and completing assessments (e.g., preparation of a Curriculum Vitae (CV)). One of the concerns noted during development of the online content was that the students might scroll too quickly through one of the important resources, the virtual business tour, so they can get their CV done quickly. This means they might not engage fully in the real learning aspects of the programme, and end up with an incomplete or poor quality CV. The educational developer is worried about changing a programme which used to rely on a face to face approach with students being stepped through the programme by a Tutor in class. There will be tutors facilitating the online course, but they are new to online teaching. The developer is not sure how the students will engage with the tutors, each other and with the online materials. The tutors are worried that they won’t know when the students are struggling. The developer is not sure how to evaluate the changes to the design of the materials and how to find out the level of support required for the students.

Situation
F2F course now offered online

Key Issues for:
Tutors
-> Tutors are new to online teaching- raises concerns around engagement. Engagement of students with tutors, each other and the online materials.
-> Tutors inexperience may cause frustration and negative feelings in on line delivery. This may also cause time delay in interactions between tutor and learner.
->Will tutors recognize if the students are struggling?
->Tracking Students progress!
Course Developer
->Developer not sure how to evaluate the changes to course design.
->Developer not sure how to find level of support for students.
Learners
->Lack of interaction and feeling of isolation by learner.
->Since it’s the first time management and discipline could be key problem for the learner.
->Learner might not engage fully and so produce an incomplete CV.

How can the problem be solved?
Key Problem

How to evaluate the effectiveness of this new course for the students and the tutors?
-> By utilizing a Needs analysis for both the students and the tutors
-> By utilizing an Effectiveness Evaluation for both the students and the tutors
-> Use asynchronous discussion forum to communicate –learner-learner OR facilitator- learner
->Facilitators could engage in debriefing activities with learners, through discussion forum.

What strategies can be used?
-> We need to look at the context of the course and decide if the design is good.
-> Know our learners ->Perform a diagnostic survey and pre-technology survey to anaylse learners learning style and technological understanding to troubleshoot through learning process.
-> Create an evaluation plan, what decisions are going to be made from this evaluation.
-> Taking expert review of material from third party before implementation.
-> Provide learners with feedback time to time on their progress.

Heres the 6 phases to our process:

How can the evaluation process assist in finding a solution?
->It will help find and fix problems for all stakeholders.
->It will help developer assess the design.
->It will help tutors analyse, what/how the delivery could be done to make it more simple and effective.
->It will give opportunity to learners to evaluate and make the programme better,also it will help learner get the best quality result as a outcome to the evaluation process.
What type of evaluation is appropriate in this situation?
->An Effectiveness Evaluation for the students, the purpose of which is to assess the effectiveness of the mode of delivery. An example would be a Student Questionnaire which would focus on the students’ perceptions about the effectiveness of online learning for them.
->A Needs Analysis for the students to determine the support they require.
->An Effectiveness Evaluation for the tutors to gauge their perceptions of how the students engaged with them through the tools provided.
-> A Needs Analysis for the tutors to determine what support they require in up skilling in online technologies and online pedagogy.
->Usability- how easy it is to navigate around and not lose your path.
->Viability
->Review-Done during design /Development phase
-> Usability test before the module goes live
-> Expert review-Whether they meet standards?

Would love to have your comments on our evaluation.

    It is good to see you suggest both a needs analysis and an effectiveness evaluation. I really like the suggestion: "Know our learners - Perform a diagnostic survey and pre-technology survey to analyse learners' learning style and technological understanding to troubleshoot through learning process." The suggestion for using online discussions could be helpful. These are notorious for lack of participation and some learners feel intimidated.

    Would you also support other means? For example, individual phone calls especially to the learners who appear to be struggling or motivating text messages to all the class with an invitation to contact the lecturer.

    I see you also suggest several other types of evaluation for the taster : Usability, Viability, Review, and Expert review. You are going to be busy - which kind is most pertinent for this particular case study do you think?
